In the Beginning...

Let's start at the very beginning...a very good place to start!

It was the end of August 2003. We had just settled into our new home while our son was away at camp. Everything was perfect! We were enjoying our gorgeous in-ground pool, the peaceful silence and the end of the summer--just the two of us.

On our son's last day of camp, we drove down to South Jersey to pick him up and just as we got back into the car to take the drive back to Long Island, I felt a terrible pain on my ankle. A "black bug" decided to take a bite and my ankle turned beet red. I really didn't think much of it, so I washed it off and went about my business.

About two days later, I felt awful. I was achy, chilled and had "spots" all over my body. I mean ALL OVER! Even on the palms of my hands. I immediately called my internist and she said I should come over. She was baffled by my spots and took tons of blood. However, she didn't prescribe anything because she wanted to know exactly what she was dealing with.

I progressively felt worse, but we had to wait the two weeks for the results. She suspected Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Sure...why not! But when the results came back, it was negative. My doc prescribed antiobiotics and within a few days, life was back to normal. Or so I thought!
